Choose A Major

The Computer Engineering major involves students that want to know exactly how and why computers work the way they do. After learning how computers operate they constantly strive in ways to make computers even better. Computer Engineering is a degree in sciences. Computer Engineering has two main aspects which are Software Engineering and Hardware Engineering. Computer Engineering stresses largely on science and math courses. Most of the upper division classes that are taken involve lab work. In this course it is very important to be able to solve different problems, work well other people, and also be able to independently work.
One related career to Computer Engineering is being a software engineer. Software engineers usually work for software development companies. Software engineers create coded instruction that a computer how to operate or what to do in certain steps. When creating software a software engineering team is usually involved. Therefore, a software engineer does a certain part of the development. It is often compared to a group of people putting a giant puzzle together.  Then after the code is finalized the software engineers would instruct programmers to actually create the program. After the programming part of the process computer engineers often end up testing the software to see if it was developed correctly.

Computer engineering careers also involve a lot of testing which is called quality assurance. There are two main testing jobs which are black box testing and white box testing. Black box testing involves programming while white box testing is making sure that nothing goes wrong when using the computer. Another popular job especially those that know computer language a lot better is database administration. Then another career would be web based where you would be working with scripts online making sure everything is working right. And all of these are entry level jobs that could be attained right after getting a degree in engineering.

First Day Experience

I actually don’t have a first day experience because I missed the first day of class. So, therefore I will instead tell you about myself and what I want to learn in counseling 12.
First off, most of my family addresses me by middle name which is Anthony, but I’d rather just be called Mark. It is now my second year at Mission College. My overall experience at Mission College has been positive. At the moment I am majoring in Computer Engineering with a focus on software programming. Although recently I have felt kind of unsure of whether or not I should pursue that career goal. Because there are many other choices out there that I may enjoy more than computer engineering But I guess college is where I will find out whether I will enjoy or not enjoy a certain career.
In counseling 12 I hope to get a better outlook on other career choices. I also hope to make a clear decision on what career I end up pursuing. Because it seems that time is very limited now a days and certain things need to be reached. In this class I also hope to gain better knowledge on what degrees will increase my chances of getting certain jobs. Another interesting thing I saw in the syllabus was the interview section. In the competitive world we have today it would be very important to land a good interview to go along with a good resume. Overall this class seems like it can help me get in the right direction, set reasonable goals, and work hard to achieve them.
